I want to test a leak in a pipe that collects rain water from a down leader from my roof and goes to a pipe that leads to the sewer. The opening to the pipe which may be cracked is on the second floor and the leak is in the basement. In the basement the pipe comes in through a brick wall and the water comes in around where the pipe enters the basement.

How do I prevent the color from be washed away by the time I get from the opening of the pipe to the basement? It leaks during heavy rain when the flow is very fast and I am thinking... wont the color be diluted out quickly? before I make it to the basement? Also how do I prevent the tablet from being washed down the drain pipe before it dissolves?

There is a chance you will have too much flow for the color to come through. Powder dissolves faster and colors more water. That may be a better route for you.

How long will the dye be visible and what causes the dye to disappear? Is it light activated or time sensitive?

The dye will be visible until it is diluted or flushed away. It is not light activated or time sensitive.

Will this work to see if my sewer line going out of the house is leaking into my ejector pit which is close by in the basement which does get some ground water dripping into it. If so how many tablets should be used?

    Administrator

Yes it will work. The amount you use would depend on how much you think is reaching the pit. Over doing it won't hurt anything.
